From Luby's to the Legislature is an account of one woman's experience from surviving the massacre at a Texas cafeteria where her parents lost their lives to a decade in the Texas legislature as a champion of the Second Amendment.
(Portland, ME 12/9/09) Suzanna Gratia Hupp, a chiropractor from central Texas never thought she would take a stand on gun rights. Growing up with her siblings, she recalls how her father even forsook fishing for fear of harming another creature. When tragedy struck however, leaving her many yards away from her own firearm as her parents and twenty one others were executed in a family eatery she was left wondering why obeying the law meant surrendering her safety to a maniac. So began her journey from tragedy, to the media, to the Texas Legislature where she spent ten years fighting against gun control.
A reluctant veteran of the mass media, Suzanna admits, "In fact, you name the show, newspaper, or magazine, and I have probably been a guest on it or quoted in it." Among her credits, Suzanna has appeared on The Phil Donahue Show, America's Most Wanted, World News Tonight, Geraldo, 48 Hours, Good Morning America and the Today Show to name only a few. She has faced off against Senator Charles Schumer before a House committee, and found kinship with Ted Nugent, John Walsh, and received an award from Charlton Heston.
Never one to shy from controversy, Suzanna takes the argument beyond the physicality of the gun and into the heart of the issue: The guaranteed right of the citizen to protect themselves and their families. In addressing the House committee on a proposed assault weapons ban, she admonished those in attendance including Senator Schumer.
"I've been sitting here, getting more and more fed up with all of this talk about these pieces of machinery having ‘no legitimate sporting purpose, no legitimate hunting purpose.' People, that is not the point of the Second Amendment! The Second Amendment is not about duck hunting. And, I know I'm not going to make very many friends saying this, but it's about our rights - all of our rights - and I swept my hand over the audience behind me - to be able to protect ourselves from all of you guys up there."
About Suzanna Gratia Hupp
Suzanna Gratia Hupp attended the University of Texas at El Paso and the Texas Chiropractic College, where she earned her doctor of chiropractic degree in 1985. Hupp served in the Texas legislature from 1996 to 2006. While serving, she was a member of the House Rural Caucus and the House Veterans and Military Affairs Caucus. She served as the chair of the House committee on child welfare and foster care. She also served as chair to the Human Services Committee and worked on the House Law Enforcement Committee. In 1998, Hupp was awarded a lifetime National Rifle Association membership by Charlton Heston. The NRA has also awarded Hupp the Sybil Ludington Women's Freedom Award. A strong advocate for the Bill of Rights, Hupp also co-founded the Civil Liberties Defense Fund which provides education and legal assistance in the area of civil rights.
